Making Matters
Project participants created an exhibition and site-specific installation at St Bartholomew's Church and a collaborative public sculpture for Lostwithiel town. This project showcased the important role communities play in supporting our wellbeing and the event was produced for Mental Health Week 2025. The LOSTWITHIEL town sculpture was produced by ten creative Lostwithiel groups, and the installation and exhibition created in partnership with Cornwall Mind's peer network to celebrate the significance creativity plays in supporting our mental health.
The creative process undertaken was collaborative with participants working together to identify how being a member of their unique group supports wellbeing. The resulting sculpture and exhibition are a testament to the invaluable sense of belonging, safety, support and purpose that groups do provide.
The Making Matters project acknowledges the power of creativity. It draws on research which suggests that arts and creative group activities can help with mental health problems. They can enable individuals to express thoughts and feelings, boost self-esteem and provide social interaction. Being creative can provide a welcome distraction from the stresses of life, helping to reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

I was lucky enough to be included in 2 workshop groups in this project.
I must say that I found both workshops equally fun and engaging and felt in both instances the benefit of Red’s clear instructions, artistic eye, and very enabling leadership. The workshops were lead with a gentle but firm skill, which I really appreciated.
And what is more, it was so enjoyable and such fun, collaborating to produce a finished piece that is going to be a sculpture in the town.
Thank you so much Red, for this wonderful opportunity!
